Japanese comic heroes come to life at Cosplay
PRINCESSES in flowing ballgowns, pilots of futuristic vessels and gigantic robots competed

on a level playing field at the national Cosplay championship at the weekend.

The grand final of the "costume play" event, held in an Albert Park hotel, brought together

Australia's most fervent supporters of Japanese comics and cartoons, better known as manga

and anime. Rather than just read or watch, people like Adelaide's Jenita Naipal spend

hundreds of hours making costumes of their favourite characters and then parading about in

them.

"I've had 3½ months to make it - that's a short time in the costuming world," the 24-year-

old said, struggling out of her robot suit from Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

"The arms are 190 centimetres, the head would be another 30 centimetres on top of that. I'm

five-foot-one-and-a-half [155 centimetres] so I'm walking with my hands above my head … I

was dying in there."

The fifth-placed Naipal won products from anime distributor Madman, which put on the event.

"I can definitely improve," she added.

Melbourne's Nicole Collis, 21, has just finished a digital arts course at RMIT, but her life

has been "full-time costume pandemonium" since then. The competition's runner-up is widely

known as Siera, her pen-name on internet forums, and she portrayed Rue from Princess Tutu, a

manga with a similar story to Swan Lake.

"I love the performance, being in character, it's a unique and creative way to express

yourself," she said, twirling in her pink and burgundy ball gown.

Her parents and friends were not particularly surprised by her hobby, she said. "They think

I'm a bit more than just crazy."

The competition's winner, Christie Lee of Sydney, was overjoyed with her prize: a trip to

Japan to attend next year's Tokyo Anime Fair.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet,'' she said.

In two outfits - a blue Victorian dress and a tight red number - the 21-year-old explained

how her favourite series was like a "twisted version" of Lewis Carroll's Alice in

Wonderland.

"I did a character named Alice from Pandora Hearts. Pretty much a girl who has a super power

and turns into a demon killer bunny," she explained, casually.

The surfing story

SURFING has taken seven-time world champion Layne Beachley around the world, but she never

thought she would end up in an exhibition.

A new collection celebrating the sport opened at the National Sports Museum at the MCG

yesterday, thrilling the wave-loving Beachley.

"I know, I was in a surfing museum before I was dead," she said, laughing.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I think that boards would be hanging up at the MCG."

Collections manager Jed Smith said The Long Ride: 100 Years of Australian Surfing traversed

the origins of the sport through to the professional circuit of today. The exhibition

stretches back to 1909 when Manly's Tommy Walker brought a board from Hawaii and started to

ride. (It was previously held that Hawaiian champion Duke Kahanamoku was the first to ride

local waves in the 1920s.)

Until interest spiked in the 1970s and '80s, surfing was amateur and recreational, he said.

"So to get hold of boards to see the evolution, it's quite extraordinary."

Beachley said her first boards were thick, wide and long. "We'd be encouraged to learn on

'moving sidewalks'," she said. "Now the craftsmanship is just amazing, and it's great to see

it be honoured and admired and appreciated."

The exhibition runs until the end of February.

The Animation Show

The Animation Show is a semi-annual touring festival of animated short films that premiered in fall 2003. It was created and was personally programmed by award-winning animators Mike Judge and Don Hertzfeldt.

Following the demise of other American touring festivals of animation, the stated purpose of the Animation Show was to continually bring animated short films back into proper cinemas, where most of them were intended to be seen, and to "free these artists from the dungeons of Internet exhibition". It was the first-ever festival of animation to be curated by working animators and has been described as a "passion project" by its creators, not something intended to turn a giant profit. A sister series of Animation Show DVD volumes are also available, but the producers stress that the theatrical and DVD lineups are intentionally a little bit different, to encourage audiences to not just wait for the DVD but to visit the cinema and view these films properly. As stated on the Animation Show programs and flyers, once the current edition of the Show is out of theaters, it's "gone forever".

Mike Judge and Don Hertzfeldt programmed the first three "Animation Shows" together. Don Hertzfeldt parted ways with the festival in 2008 and the fourth season of the Animation Show was released without his involvement.

In June of 2009 the Animation Show announced its next tour would be in 2010.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (ひぐらしのなく頃に?, lit. When the Cicadas Cry) is a Japanese murder mystery dōjin soft sound novel series produced by 07th Expansion. The games are built on the NScripter game engine and are playable on Microsoft Windows PCs. The first game in the series, Onikakushi-hen, was released on August 10, 2002, and the eighth and final game in the original PC series, Matsuribayashi-hen, was released on August 13, 2006. While the first four games carried the overall title Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, the next four games were produced under the title Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai. A bonus fan disc called Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei was released on December 31, 2006. In addition to the original series, new story arcs were created in manga form and in video games for the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS in order to expand upon the story further. The original eight PC releases will be released in English by MangaGamer with the first four games in October 2009 followed by the last four two months later. The series is focused on a group of young friends and the strange events that occur in the rural village Hinamizawa where they reside.

Two sets of drama CDs were produced, one by Wayuta and the other by Frontier Works. Novelizations of the game series were released by Kodansha Box between August 2007 and March 2009. A manga series adapted from the games began with eight different manga artists working separately on one to three of the multiple story arcs, and is published by Square Enix and Kadokawa Shoten. The manga was licensed for release in English in North America by Yen Press under the title Higurashi When They Cry and the first volume was released in November 2008. Following the manga's release in Japan, two TV anime series were produced by Studio Deen in 2006 and 2007; a third anime adaptation was released as an original video animation series starting in February 2009. The first anime series was licensed by Geneon Entertainment in English, but became unavailable due to Geneon's decision to stop sales and distribution in the American anime market. In July 2008, Geneon and Funimation Entertainment announced an agreement to distribute select titles in North America, which includes Higurashi. A live action film adaptation of the series, directed by Ataru Oikawa, premiered in Japanese theaters in May 2008, with a sequel released in May 2009.

Rito's independent and reliable 12 year-old sister, Mikan takes care of the housework while their parents are away on business and watches after Celine. In contrast to her brother, she is very mature and does not hesitate to tease him, going as far as stating they aren't blood-related, just for a laugh. Mikan also seems to have a certain lack of respect for Rito because of this (she hardly ever addresses him by his honorific as an older brother), but does answer him "Onii-chan" as thanks for trying so hard to take care of her when she develops a fever and when he gives her a Christmas present. Mikan may not show it, but she cares very deeply for Rito and misses his company, to the point one could suspect her of having a brother complex, this more evident in the second OVA where she wondered if he would marry her if they were not blood related, and in the manga where she blushes every time another character mentions her brother. She also states how she and Rito used to play together before Lala entered their lives. It is later revealed that Mikan is terrified of thunder and lightning, though Rito would always comfort her.

Lal Mirch is the holder of a corrupted pacifier. She is a female member of the Arcobaleno who states that she cannot live up to the Arcobaleno name, considering herself to be one of its weakest members. This is due to her curse being incomplete after Colonnello, her former subordinate in the COMSUBIN, attempted to take her place. Her incomplete transformation clouded her pacifier, and caused her original rain energy to change into both the mist and cloud energies, as well as causing the scars on her face. Also, if she does not use her Arcobaleno powers, her curse would gradually disappear, which is why she eventually becomes an adult again. However, upon using her Arcobaleno powers in the future, her pacifier glows blue, and she states that her pacifier was supposed to be the blue pacifier that Colonnello attained.She is also part of the Vongola's CEDEF, or Outside Advisors.According to Reborn, she shows her emotions easily and is very readable.She is voiced by Masami Suzuki in the anime.

口語，或口講嘅說話，係用把口講出嚟嘅自然語言，差唔多全世界嘅語言都係口語。

特色
口語嘅相對係書面語。最初人嘅語言係口語，文字出現，書面語跟住發展出嚟。
口語係自然語言係相對於人工語言嚟講嘅。之所以「自然」係因為口語直接講出嚟，唔似書面語可以有多多人工嘅規則，好似：先生對學生咁講：「呢編嘢嘅呢句唔啱文法，寫過」。最人工化嘅語言就係電腦程式語言 (computer programming language)，係由人設計出嚟嘅。
喺語言學嚟講，口語直接顯露人講嘢嘅真正特色，而書面語言只係「修改過」嘅講嘢記錄，語言學家攞「口講嘅說話」嚟做資料，作出分析，事關佢哋認為日常嘅說話更眞。從語法觀點嚟睇，口講嘅說話通常有自己嘅一套語法，有時同書面語言語法好唔同。
今時今日，仲有語言係講倒寫唔倒，即係有口語冇書面語。

《塔納赫》簡介
《塔納赫》正典化並唔係喺一個時期完成，正如之前所講，佢係由巴比倫之囚時期開始直到公元前一世紀呢二百四十年時間寫成。最先完成正典化係《妥拉》，大約喺公元前四百年左右完成。跟住係《先知書》，大約喺公元前二百五十至二百年完成，最後係《聖錄》，去到公元前一世記後半期先完成。而全套《塔納赫》正典化係喺公元一百年左右先完成。
公元前六十年寫成嘅次經《馬加比傳》。而尼希米係大約公元前 445 年嘅人，因為咁，所以一般相信《塔納赫》正典化係喺公元前五世記下半葉先開始進行。
《妥拉》正典化嘅具體完成時間，雖然而家重有仍然有爭議。但可以肯定係唔會遲過公元前四世紀初，原因係喺公元前四百年左右，當時有個叫"撒瑪利亞"嘅分離教派，已經用緊《妥拉》做佢哋嘅聖書，佢哋將《妥拉》叫做"撒瑪利亞五經"，另外喺公元前三世紀亦己經出現《七十二希臘文聖經》，所以可以肯定《妥拉》正典化唔會遲過公元前四世紀初。
到咗大約公元一百年前後，由於當時喺猶太教內部有好多以先知或者著名猶太歷史人物個名而出嘅書 (佢哋叫呢啲書做次經或者偽經)，加上基督教嘅威脅，為咗唔想造成信仰混亂，於是猶太教拉比喺巴勒斯坦西部沿海非利士平原嘅猶太教中心加姆尼亞 (Jamnia)舉行宗教會議，正式確立咗而家嘅《塔納赫》定本。

英文版《塔納赫》

註 1: 多數講猶太教或者以色列文化嘅書其實都好一致咁將 Tanakh 譯做《塔納赫》，不過亦有特別例子，好似上海辭書出版社出嘅《猶太教小辭典》(ISBN 753261241)，就譯咗做《泰納克》。另外，希伯來聖經亦係一個較常見嘅譯法，呢個譯法嚟自英文 Hebrew Bible，不過 Hebrew Bible 通常係用嚟解釋《塔納赫》係乜，另外 Hebrew Bible 亦同時包含埋基督教所理解嘅舊約聖經在內，但對於猶太人嚟講，Tanakh 並唔係一本舊嘅約，所以呢個稱呼通常只係基督徒先至會用。而喺大部份以猶太教為主嘅中文書，都普遍用《塔納赫》做中文譯名，所以呢度就揀咗《塔納赫》做 Tanakh 中文標題

中國一詞自古有之，最早指居於「天下」（世界）中心嘅中原地帶，近代以來，「中國」一詞成爲民族國家意義上嘅政治概念。一般嚟講，「中國」：

由歷史嘅角度，係從三皇五帝嘅傳說時代開始，經歷了唐堯、虞舜、夏、商、周、秦、漢、新、三國時代、晉、南北朝、隋、唐、五代十國、宋、遼、金、元、明、清、中華民國和中華人民共和國等一系列朝代和政權嘅連貫歷史嘅整體。
由地理嘅角度，位於歐亞大陸東部，太平洋西岸，係世界上人口最多、地域最遼闊嘅國家之一。
由政治/行政的角度，而家存在兩個政體：喺中國大陸、香港、澳門嘅中華人民共和國，喺臺灣地區嘅中華民國。詞源
古代漢語中嘅「國」不等同於現代嘅「國家」。
「國」最初嘅意思係天子、諸侯所居住嘅築城的地方（及周邊近郊），更遠統治嘅地方稱「野」，「國」對天子可指京畿，如：「國人暴動」。當然諸侯方面也可以使用「國」。如：（衛）懿公好養鶴，鶴有祿位，狄人入侵，「國人不出戰」，招致滅國。（參考來源）因此，就是要加「中」來修飾「國」才能明確地表示「京畿」嘅含義。
隨着歷史嘅發展，各政權嘅直接統治範圍不斷擴大，至春秋「國野」已逐漸不分，原先稱「野」嘅地方也能稱「國」了，「國」指代嘅範圍就這樣逐漸擴大。隨着兼併更加劇烈，進而秦統一各國，「國」的概念開始趨向於「地方」、「地帶」，如「北國」、「南國」、「水鄉澤國」、「雪國」。
「國」也被用來抽象地指代某一地理區域嘅政權和人民，如：「治世不一道，便國（有利於國）不必法古。」（《商君書》），呢種用法接近於今日所講嘅「國家」一詞。

「國」
五千年浩浩蕩蕩嗰人文歷史最為國人所樂道。夏朝為傳說中,中國第一個朝代﹐周朝為最長朝代﹐經歷三十七代天子，八百多年，到公元前二百六年，先至被秦國吞併。中國漢唐兩朝為鼎盛時期﹐至今仍有華人自稱唐人﹐而漢族亦因此著稱。
